This coming New Moon has some Eros and Thanatos vibes. Most people know Eros and Thanathos to be the instinct for life and the instinct for death, as described by the famous psychoanalyst Sigmund Freud. He named these instincts after the Greek God of Love and the Greek God of Death.
Eros is the Greek God of love. He is a winged God and is the son of the Greek Goddess Aphrodite and Greek God Ares. Aphrodite is the Goddess of love and beauty, and Ares is the God of war. Eros has the ability to make mortals and Gods fall in love by shooting them with his bow and arrow. Eros is portrayed as nice, compassionate, loving, and full of life. This is how Eros came to represent the instinct of life in the works of Freud.
Thanatos is the Greek God of death. He is the son of Greek Goddess Nyx and Greek God Erebus. Nyx is the Goddess of the night and chaos, and Erebus is the God of darkness. Thanatos is associated with violent death and would be called upon by Gods who wished to inflict death upon one another. Thanatos often manifested anger, violence, and aggression. This is how Thanatos came to represent the instinct of death in the works of Freud.
As a teenager I was into black and white analogue photography. I’ve developed numerous of photos in darkrooms. Even though I haven’t been in a darkroom (or adobe photoshop) for years (I don’t even own a camera anymore), I’m still very much a lover of photography. I especially love black and white portrait, fashion and nude photography. I have a weak spot for the works of Helmut Newton. A true artist, known for kink photography. The photo that I choose on top for this article is quite virtuous. Most of his work captures not just Eros but also Thanatos. I guess that’s another reason why I love his work so much: I’m a lover of the dark, taboo and hidden while at the same time I adore beauty, softness and light. Photography is an art that plays with light and darkness. Its essence is capturing light and capturing darkness. In honor of Helmut Newton and to share with you Eros and Thanatos vibes / kink photography, here’s some more work of one of my favorite artists:
The New Moon in Libra
The New Moon at 23 degrees Libra arrives at 3.31 pm ET / 9.31 pm CET on October 16th. Here’s a quick summary of the planetary placements that influence the New Moon… Venus, Goddess of Love and Mother of Eros, is the ruler of this New Moon. She’s in Virgo at neutral ground, safe and unharmed. Venus is in her fall in Virgo, having a bit of trouble indulging in pleasures and sexual activities in the home of the Virgin. However, she’s out of reach of the malefics while she’s in Virgo. The malefics Saturn and Pluto are in Capricorn and Mars is in Aries. Which means the New Moon is square Saturn and Pluto and opposite Mars. While Aphrodite is safe and sound in the house of the Virgin, the Moon Goddess gets inflicted with pain. Venus has a bit of difficulty offering protection to the Moon, since the two Goddesses aren’t in aspect. Even though Venus Goddess of Love rules the New Moon and is safe herself, the Moon Goddess is on her own. This means that this New Moon comes with friction, tension and power struggles.
The New Moon in Libra under the ruling of Venus is about the desire to bring harmony, balance and justice. Libra, the scales, is focused on justice, harmony, balance and equality. Venus in Virgo wants to serve the greater good. It’s not about what serves the I, it’s about what serves the other. This New Moon is about equality for all. This New Moon wants to bring initiations into feminism and better futures. New beginnings in situations of injustice. New beginnings in flawed politics. Visions for a future new world that is more just. This New Moon is Eros. This New Moon wants to bring loving kindness and equality. This New Moon wants to bring sexual and gender equality. A New Moon for the queers. This New Moon wants to bring patriarchy down! However… Saturn, Pluto and Mars won’t give in so easy. Together they are Thanatos. And they are not willing to give up their power. Even though this New Moon comes with visions and ideas of better futures; the execution will have to wait. It’s feminism against patriarchy. This New Moon is Eros vs. Thanatos. Life vs. death; pleasure vs. pain; love vs. hate; laughter vs. tears; peace vs. war; order vs. chaos; sex vs. rape. You get the point. So, it’s Eros against Thanatos. Sadly I have to say that Thanatos is stronger at the moment. Even though at her core this New Moon is Eros; the Thanatos overpowers her. This is not a New Moon to set intentions and this is definitely not a New Moon to start new things that are important to you. This astrologer advices you to wait. In general, New Moons are great for fresh starts and new projects. This one isn’t. Don’t fear though. Times will change. Eros will get stronger and Thanatos will get weaker. These are the cycles of life. Nothing is permanent. Feminism will bring patriarchy down. Not today, but it will in the future (and hopefully soon).
While the New Moon takes place, her ruler Venus is approaching an opposition with Neptune. To add to the above: this New Moon might come with some confusion and illusion. Things aren’t always what they seem, when Neptune is involved. Neptune can also enhance the lusts and desires of Venus, not necessarily in a useful way; making us fantasize about or indulge in people or things that aren’t necessarily good for us. Bottomline, the advice for this New Moon: keep things as simple as you can in your life at the moment. Make yourself some healthy meals. Go on forest walks. Keep your calendar clean.
Below I share my insights on the transits between the New Moon in Libra and the Full Moon in Taurus at the end of October.
Venus in Virgo opposite Neptune in Pisces – October 18th
Matters of (self)love and relationships in general may become a little unclear around these days. Depending on where Virgo and Pisces reside in your chart you may experience romantic dreams, indulge in romance, get a little obsessed over a lover or get confused about a relationship (look at the houses that Virgo and Pisces are on, to get clues on the topics). Neptune can bring fantasy, the tendency to indulge and/or confusion to the Goddess of Love.
Mars in Aries square Jupiter in Capricorn & Venus in Virgo trine Jupiter in Capricorn – October 18th / 19th
Mars retrograde has been in a sign based square with Jupiter for months now and will now be in an exact degree based square with Jupiter for the second time. In other words, Jupiter has been in a tough relationship with Mars for months, but around October 18th it intensifies. Mars in his domicile (Aries) is stronger than Jupiter in his fall (Capricorn). Mars brings separation and pain while Jupiter wants to bring growth and luck. This transit is a hard one. Look for the houses that Capricorn and Aries are on, in your chart, to get some clues in what area(s) of your life you might experience a bit of trouble these days. These areas of your life have possibly been challenging for a few months now. The blows might be softened by Venus though. While Mars fires his guns at Jupiter, Venus offers him a helping hand. A useful offer might come in, a good talk, a shoulder to lean on, a lovely dinner with a friend, something like that. Something good and supportive in troubling times. Venus is here to remind us that we are not alone in this.
Mercury in Scorpio opposite Uranus in Taurus – October 19th
This is the second time this month that Mercury is opposite Uranus. Mercury was opposite Uranus on October 7th, just before he stationed retrograde on October 13th/14th. Possibly some unexpected message, insight or encounter entered your life around October 7th. If so, there’s possibly a revisiting of it around October 19th. Uranus tends to bring unexpected events and twist and turns. Uranus being opposite Mercury (first direct on the 7th and now retrograde on the 19th) means that these twists and turns probably have to do with communication, thinking, messaging, traveling or technology. Look at the house in your chart that contains Scorpio to delineate in what area in your life this Uranus-Mercury transit takes place.
The Sun enters Scorpio on October 22nd 6.59 pm ET / October 23rd 12.59 am CET
Scorpio season is here! Happy birthday to all my Scorpions. I wish you a beautiful new year around the Sun. With the Sun in Scorpio Fall season is full underway. Leaves are falling from the trees. The days grow darker and colder. (At least in the Northern hemisphere.) It’s the season of Halloween. We’re reminded of the cycles of life, especially death and decay. It’s a time to draw inward.
Scorpio doesn’t fear the dark, the cold and the dying. Scorpio is a water sign and as such has deep emotional qualities. Scorpio is a fixed sign, which makes it focused. Combine these qualities and we see that Scorpio has the ability to penetrate the deep dark emotional waters with incredible focus (sometimes obsession) like no other sign can. This sign is intuitive and can read others incredibly well. This sign also knows how to hold its defenses. Scorpio is ruled by Mars. As such this warrior sign wins wars by strategic, patient and cunning play instead of brute force. A scorpion awaits its prey, knows its weak spot and attacks at the right moment. Scorpio definitely holds Thanatos. And Eros as much! This sign is known for its sexuality. Every zodiac sign is connected to a part of the body. Scorpio is connected with the genitals. However, I wouldn’t necessarily say that it’s this connection that makes this sign sexual. It’s the ability to penetrate areas where other signs can’t come. The hidden, the dark, the obscure, the occult and the taboo.
With the Sun in Scorpio we’re supported to retreat and turn inward. It’s a time to focus on existential matters. No sign is as much connected with death as Scorpio. Which is, in my opinion, healthy and very needed. Because as humans we’re mortal beings. It’s good to think about the topic of death every now and then, and about your own death. It puts life in perspective. Fall season reminds us of the cycles of life and the fact that death eventually awaits all. Thinking about death automatically makes one think about life. Where am I? Where am I going? Am I happy with this path that I’m on? If not, what can I do to change things?
Mercury cazimi in Scorpio on October 25th
We’re are halfway through Mercury retrograde. Mercury cazimi means that Mercury is at the heart of the Sun. The Sun and Mercury are aligned. At this moment some insights regarding Mercury retrograde topics might surface. Look at the house that Scorpio is on in your chart, to see what topics are affected by this Mercury retrograde. On October 25th or in the day or two days surrounding this date, you might gain new insights in regards to these topics.
Mercury retrograde enters Libra & Venus enters Libra on October 27th / 28th
Mercury enters back into Libra at the end of his retrograde period. There was some major Scorpio energy with both the Sun and Mercury being in Scorpio. Suddenly some Libra energy comes back into play. Almost on the same moment that Mercury enters Libra, Venus enters Libra too. All of a sudden we get some major air energy and cardinal energy. This shift will be felt! It’s a shift from feeling to thinking: a shift from the deep underground (Mercury in Scorpio) to what’s up in the clouds (Mercury in Libra). It’s a shift from care and nurture (Venus in Virgo) to harmony seeking activities like relationship therapy but also long night candlelight dinners with good wine (Venus in Libra). Mercury won’t stay long in Libra. Soon he’ll station direct and after that he’ll move into Scorpio again. Venus has some more time in Libra, she just entered the sign and will travel through all thirty degrees.
Venus is at home in Libra. Venus rules the signs Taurus and Libra. In both these signs she can do her work as a Goddess of Love at her best. However, whoever moves through Libra these days, faces Mars (in Aries) and Saturn and Pluto (in Capricorn). So even though Venus is at home in Libra, she’s not entirely safe. We can expect the Goddess of Love to bring some good stuff into the parts of our chart that contain Libra, but she can’t bring as much good stuff as she would usually bring. Venus in Libra wants to bring just relationships and equality into the world. Libra is the sign of the scales: justice, harmony and balance. Venus in Libra wants to bring people together instead of driving them apart. I hope Venus in Libra is able to tip the scales in positive directions, with all that’s going on in the world.
The Full Moon at 8 degrees Taurus arrives on October 31st
I’ll be back with you soon on an update on the second Full Moon of October.
