The New Moon arrives on April 11th 10.30 pm ET / 12th 4.30 am CET at 22 degrees Aries. This is an active New Moon. The Moon is under the ruling of Mars. Mars is in Gemini, the sign of the ever moving twins, separating from a conjunction with the North Node and supported by trine by Jupiter. The Moon is also connected with Jupiter, by sextile, and connected with Mars, also by sextile. In other words, there are some supportive connections here, which is nice. The Gemini and Aries vibes make this an active New Moon (and the North Node adds some activity too). Hence the title of this article: go go go. There’s lots of stuff going on. The Moon is digesting a lot of input. This Full Moon wants you to go out and achieve. This is a New Moon ‘to do’, not one to relax. This is a good New Moon for work, sports, debating. This is a New Moon to work on your goals.
The only thing that’s not so achievable with this New Moon, is love. Venus is combust the Sun, in her detriment and in a square with Pluto. Okay, if love means bondage and power play to you, that’s something that you can do with this New Moon. But Venus isn’t shopping pink flowers at the moment. She’s dealing with too much uncomfortable stuff. Romantic dinner dates and proposals are not so much on Venus’s to do list these days. However, Venus, undergoing rebirth (as she’s moving away from the Sun) and dealing with the Lord of the Underworld, might be supportive of transforming relationship dynamics. If there’s a lack of balance in power in relationships, this is the moment to address it. If fear of intimacy is creating troubles in your love life, this is the moment to address it. Whatever that has been unconscious, needs to become conscious. Whatever that wasn’t talked about, we need to talk about it now. Whatever that kept being swept under the rug… it doesn’t want to go back under. Venus wants to transform the current dynamics. It’s fucking uncomfortable. It feels ugly. But that’s what this astrology is supportive of: Death and Rebirth of Love. This astrology is also supportive of being a proud single. When I was in the supermarket the other day, I heard that Pussycat Dolls song ‘I don’t need a man to make me feel good’. It made me think of Venus’s current predicament. She doesn’t feel great at the moment, but she knows she will feel better in the future. When she enters Taurus, she will be and feel like an Empress (the Tarot card related to Taurus). She knows she doesn’t need a man; not in her survival days and not in her ruling days. She’s a Queen anyway. So are you!
Lots of stuff is going on. Venus has her own drama to deal with. In the meantime, the New Moon, Mars and Mercury are here to help us move forward. Soon enough we will enter ‘fixed astrology’ again. Soon enough a bunch of planets will be in Taurus, squaring Jupiter and Saturn in Aquarius, and things will start to sloooow down again. If there’s something on your to do list that needs speed, that needs fast thinking, that needs lots of communication; this is the time to work on it. Jupiter’s help from above is supportive in stabilizing a good outcome. Not everything that’s undertaken at the moment will flourish; but in the midst of two years of very challenging astrology, this is one of the better moments to get some stuff done with good results.
Mars spent many months in Aries, in the past year. In the second half of 2020 Mars was in Aries, for a while retrograde. With this New Moon we’re wrapping up some storyline from back then. You can look at the house in your chart that Aries is on, for some clues. Whatever that Mars in Aries signified for you, there’s some healing and finishing of that going on right now.
Ceres, Persephone and Pluto
The New Moon is conjunct the dwarf planet / asteroid Ceres. Ceres is the Roman name for the Greek goddess Demeter. Her daughter is Proserpina / Persephone. In mythology, Persephone got abducted by Pluto / Hades into the underworld. On the day of the New Moon, the asteroid Persephone, conjunct Venus in Aries, squares Pluto in Capricorn. All three characters that are closely connected in Greek mythology, have prominent placements with this New Moon.
Coincidentally (or not) I’m working on a paper for an academic journal, on how to work with the mythology of Demeter in the counseling / astrology setting. I would love to tell you more about it in this New Moon article, but this article would become too long. Thus, I’ve decided to organize a webinar. It will be live on Sunday April 11th; you can sign up here. You can also attend the webinar in your own time on a later day, it will become available for download. The webinar is free. Donations are welcome. In this webinar I will tell the story of Demeter, Persephone and Hades and I will tell how Demeter may serve as an inspiration for coping in modern day life.
Demeter is an ancient Mother goddess. One that teaches us about the mysteries of life, of death and rebirth. She has many similarities with the Egyptian goddess Isis. In fact, there are temples devoted to them both, together. Their teachings are very similar. In this webinar we’ll explore the story and teachings of Demeter.
April 13th / 14th Sun sextile Mars
Just after the New Moon the sextile between the Sun in Aries and Mars in Gemini comes to completion. This is a lovely aspect, especially helpful to the Sun. A lot of fire energy helps you to give a boost to whatever you initiated or started to manifest with the New Moon. This is an energetic day. Working on your projects, working out, manifesting your ambitions. Go for it. This is a day with strong ego force. Which means, this is day to establish yourself in this world.
April 14th Venus enters Taurus
Venus moves from the sign of her detriment (Aries) into her home Taurus. Venus is the ruler of the fixed earth sign Taurus. Venusian matters have been challenging in the past few weeks. Venus isn’t that comfortable and powerful in Aries. Venus was, and still is, combust; that means that she’s under the rays of the Sun which makes her less powerful. Venus is still combust, but less close to the source of the heat, moving away from the Sun. In Taurus, Venus is better able to withstand the heat of the Sun.
Venus in Taurus is all about enjoying the good pleasures of life, creating beauty and giving birth to solid and sustainable lovable things. Venus in Taurus nurtures and creates. Pure fertility. She grows flowers. She makes love. The Venusian Taurus to do list: Shop flowers. Bake brownies. Book your massage appointment. But Venus in Taurus is not just about the pleasures in life. Venus in Taurus is Queen at creating long lasting good stuff. Whether you’re working on a business project or building a house, Venus in Taurus helps us to create sustainable beauty in that. Slow and steady wins the race with Taurus. Earth moves slow. But Earth is strong. Keep that in mind with whatever that is creating, growing and birthing in your life at the moment. Aries season might be ‘go go go’. But now we’re heading towards Taurus season, recognizing that we also need stability and durability in order to move forward.
April 15th Sun sextile Jupiter
The Sun in Aries sextiles Jupiter in Aquarius. This is a supportive revealing transit that shines light on the progress that we’re making in the parts of our chart / life that contain Aquarius. Saturn and Jupiter are reconstructing the Aquarius parts of your life, since a few months now. How is that going? The Sun shines his light on the progress. Growth and potential may become visible. The Sun and Jupiter also both rule wisdom. Insights and knowledge may be gained on the days surrounding April 15th, especially in regards to topics that are under the houses that contain Aries and Aquarius in your chart.
April 16th Sun square Pluto
Venus squared Pluto on the day of the New Moon. Now the Sun squares Pluto. Pluto is basically standing still in the heavens above, as he will soon station retrograde at 26 degrees Capricorn. At the end of 2021, Venus will station retrograde at 26 degrees Capricorn (conjunct Pluto at 25 degrees Capricorn). As so often is the case with transits, there’s a storyline. Happenings are more closely connected than we might see at first. We don’t know what the future brings. But today’s transit might shine some light on what that storyline will be about. It’s a story of Venus and Pluto.
This one will not show itself in each and every individual’s life. In case Venus is your ascendant’s ruler (in other words, if you’re Taurus or Libra rising) and/or in case you have personal planets / personal points within one or two degrees of 26 degrees of the cardinal signs (Aries, Cancer, Libra, Capricorn), these Venus x Pluto transits are ones to watch (a few more are coming up throughout 2021, introducing the retrograde journey of Venus at the end of 2021). This Sun square Pluto is, again, closely connected to the Venus – Pluto story. The Sun shines light. The Sun reveals. Venus and Pluto were conjunct in Capricorn in late January. So maybe, something from back then has been more present again in the last week with the Venus – Pluto square. Good chance that thing / person / topic / story will show itself again with other Venus – Pluto transits in 2021 and especially late December (and will undergo some kind of transformation / rebirth).
I know, this all sounds pretty vague. But specific interpretations can only be given in a birth chart consultation, since that depends very much on the personal chart. This Venus – Pluto story will be different for each person (and will mostly show for those with the above mentioned placements).
April 17th Mars trine Jupiter, Mercury sextile Jupiter and Mars, Mercury square Pluto
On April 17th Mars (in Gemini) trines Jupiter (in Aquarius), Mercury (in Aries) sextiles Jupiter and Mars, and Mercury also squares Pluto. Lot’s off stuff going on. I’m not dissecting each transit. To summarize: it’s a day of activity and movement. It’s a day where we may come to see where there’s potential for growth (Jupiter’s involvement). It’s also a day where we may come to see that there’s something we need to let go off (Pluto’s involvement). Gaining insights, but the clarity still needs to come. For most of us the insights will primarily pertain topics that fall under the house that contains Aries in the birth chart. If you can’t yet put the pieces of the puzzle together; more clarity will come in the next two days.
April 18th / 19th Mercury cazimi
Mercury is conjunct the Sun at 29 degrees Aries. The pieces of the puzzle are coming together. At the very last degree of Aries, just hours before both Mercury and the Sun will move into Taurus, there’s the wrapping up of the Aries storyline with some insights coming in. Major and for most of us not that easy stuff happened in Aries, in the second half of 2020. In the past few weeks we’ve done some healing. Now we’re getting that clarity that we need, to understand what has happened and to understand how to move forward. Letting go of something that hurts or did hurt. Seeing the potential of the future.
April 19th Mercury enters Taurus, Sun enters Taurus
A big shift from cardinal fire energy to fixed earth. The Sun in Aries comes with the start of Spring. With the Sun in Taurus it’s about containing this season.
Venus is already in Taurus, and with also Mercury and the Sun moving in Taurus, there’s a big emphasis on the Taurus parts of our charts. All planets in Taurus are under the ruling of Venus. Venus is at home in Taurus. She’s a bit challenged as she’s combust the Sun. She’s also challenged by Uranus, who’s been hanging out in Taurus since a few years. When Venus conjuncts Uranus, on April 24th, all planets in Taurus will ‘feel’ that. More on that conjunction follows below. It has already been building up since Venus entered Taurus. Venus also is challenged by Saturn in Aquarius, she will square Saturn on April 25th. Insights on that one are also shared below.
This gathering of planets in Taurus also puts an emphasis on the Saturn – Uranus square. This square was emphasized in February, with a gathering of planets in Aquarius. Now the square is emphasized from the position of Taurus. Taurus is a sign that stabilizes. Taurus doesn’t really do change. It’s not that Taurus doesn’t do movement, but she does movement like a bull: slow, forceful, stable, grounded, strong. Headstrong. No swift movements, no sudden twists and turns. No unexpected plots. Uranus in Taurus, however, forces this bull to make some strange jumps through unexpected loops.
The Sun in Taurus shines in the act of creating. Taurus is resourceful; ruled by Venus, she’s skilled at creating beauty from whatever materials at hand. In mythology we see the bull symbolized with fertility goddesses, especially in ancient Egypt. The goddess Hathor. I often think of Hathor when I think of Taurus. The Egyptian Mother goddess, the Cow, that creates and nurtures. (In later Egypt Hathor became identified with Isis.) Taurus is stubborn like a bull. Taurus is persistent. People with strong Taurus placements can sometimes be stubborn to a fault. It is however, also this stubbornness, that makes them able to run marathons. No sign has stamina like a Taurus. Bulls can run marathons on only a little bit of grass. When Taurus has a vision and the will, she can create anything from the littlest of resources. An oasis in the Egyptian desert. Venus, goddess of love and beauty, is after all the ruler of this sign.
With Mercury’s ingress in Taurus, we move from the fast sharp thinking (Mercury in Aries), to slower more deliberate thinking. No more impulsive shoutouts. Beautifully constructed sentences. Mercury in Taurus supports us in recognizing what we want to build. Just before Mercury entered Taurus, in the very last degree of Aries, there was this moment of insight as Mercury was cazimi (conjunct the Sun). Some storyline got wrapped up. Some chapter is finished. Something got deconstructed and something got healed. How do we want to move on now? It may not be completely clear yet. Mercury in the upcoming weeks will start to build a vision with the knowledge and resources available. Sometimes you need to start working with the clay before you know exactly what pot you want to create. Sometimes, the vision comes as the creation process is going on.
April 22nd / 23rd Venus conjunct Uranus
When Venus conjuncts Uranus at 10 degrees Taurus, Aphrodite (goddess of love, beauty and ruler of all that’s good and stable) meets up with Prometheus (the one that wants to set us free and changes the status quo). For some this transit will be uncomfortable. Taurus, after all, doesn’t like change and Uranus brings exactly that (change). If you’re able to find comfort in chaos, if you’re able to handle plot twists, this transit might bring a liberation or adventure. You’re reinventing the structures of the part of your chart that contains Taurus. Look at the house that Taurus is on, in your chart, to see where all the upheaval is taking place. This transit has been building up since mid April.
This transit also highlights the square between ‘everything, and especially Uranus and Venus, in Taurus’ and ‘everything, and especially Saturn, in Aquarius’. Saturn builds walls. Uranus demolishes walls. Saturn sets boundaries. Uranus breaks them down. Saturn does tradition and the ‘same old same old’. Uranus does change and brings the new stuff. Saturn is busy restructuring the part of your chart that contains Aquarius. He’s busy making a new blueprint for that part of your chart and is creating a new and solid structure. Saturn asks you to show up, be responsible, confront your fears, work hard, at whatever that Aquarius is about for you at this point in your life. Uranus, however, is busy breaking down the Taurus structures in your chart. There’s a push to freedom, reinvention, rebellion. There’s a friction between Uranus and Saturn. In your chart it becomes visible in the houses that contain Taurus and Aquarius.
Venus conjunct Uranus is especially noteworthy for the people who have the Sun, Moon or ascendant in Taurus. You’ve been undergoing change since 2018, especially if you have the Sun, Moon or ascendant in the early degrees of Taurus. With Venus, the ruler of these placements, being conjunct Uranus; either more change is coming or some revelations about this process of liberation are coming in.
April 23rd Mars enters Cancer
Mars in Cancer is in his fall. Mars has difficulty bringing about his self-centered actions in the sign that’s related to motherhood, caring, safety and nurture. Mars supports us in being assertive. Mars supports us pursuing our desires. Mars also supports us in channeling our anger and aggression. In the home of the Moon, within the womb, Mars isn’t as confident as he usually is. Mars in Cancer may behave in strange ways. Mars in Cancer may act out of underbelly feelings. Mars in Cancer is influenced by mood swings.
Mars in Cancer might act in mysterious ways. I once was with a man who has his Mars in Cancer, a Mars in fall. He couldn’t express his anger towards me (if he ever had any? I’ve got nu clue, because he wouldn’t express it). He couldn’t handle confrontation at all. He would walk away from it. Sweet, gentle, soft guy. In the bedroom, however, he wasn’t afraid of extremes and very much into BDSM. In the safety of the bedroom, with agreements in place, his inner Mars could show itself in a not so Cancerian way. Secretly, he could be dominant and sadistic. Interestingly, I’ve also been with a man who had Mars in Capricorn. Mars is exalted in Capricorn, honored. When you google love, sex and astrology it’s often said that (Mars in) Capricorn is into control and domination, while Cancer is into loving kindness. The Mars in Capricorn man is the most submissive man I’ve been with. Super vanilla. Austin Coppock, one of my favorite astrologers, recently mentioned in a podcast that Mars in Capricorn can behave like a ‘purring kitten’ (instead of acting like a strong aggressive lion), being under that Saturnian control. That’s exactly my experience.
When it comes to sex and astrology, by the way, you can’t at all predict how someone is in the bedroom based on their chart. So many factors come into play. All planets and all signs become visible in the bedroom. One sign isn’t better at oral sex than the other. The Mars sign doesn’t say everything about domination or passion. Just saying.
Those of you that are ruled by Mars (ascendant in Aries or Scorpio) may feel like you’re going through ups and downs in the upcoming weeks. Feeling a little less secure. Feeling a little less confident to assert yourself. Watch the movements of the Moon. As she waxes and wanes, so will you.
April 24th Mercury conjunct Uranus
Change of mind. Revelations. Lightbulb moments. Mercury conjunct Uranus may come with sudden revelations and major insights. Mercury conjunct Uranus might also signify a spinning mind and mental chaos. Grabbing hold of ideas might be a bit challenging. Creating structure in the mind isn’t an easy task today. In case you’ve genius breakthroughs, go with the flow. Let the ideas come, scribble them down and structure them in later days. In case you feel ungrounded and your mind is chaotic; try some grounding activities. Taurus activities. Walk in nature. Bake brownies. Work in the garden and get your hands dirty. That kind of stuff might help you through this transit.
April 25th Venus square Saturn and Mercury square Saturn
Rebellion, protests, fighting for freedom, fighting for equality, standing up against the established regime. We will see it flair up in the newspapers again. Farmers protests and BLM protests; these are expressions of the Saturn in Aquarius x Uranus in Taurus square. As Venus and Mercury square Saturn, being pretty much conjunct Uranus, this square is activated again. My writings for April 22nd / 23rd and the Venus x Uranus conjunction still apply.
As Venus squares Saturn, matters relating may become a bit challenging. Saturn often comes with restriction, boundaries and denial. This transit may come with some anxiety or sadness. Whether it’s in romantic love, friendship or your relationship to yourself, you may be confronted with these things. However, or instead, you may also be asked to show up and take responsibility for a relationship; or need to step up in performing acts of selflove. Love is always there. Love is everywhere. But sometimes it seems like it’s not. Sometimes we need to work hard to see the love.
Saturn is at home in Aquarius. Venus is at home in Taurus. In this transit, Saturn has the upper hand. Saturn overcomes Venus. Look at the houses that contain Taurus and Aquarius in your chart. What are the topics related to those houses? Good chance you need to sacrifice a bit of Taurus for Aquarius on this day.
April 25th / 26th Mercury conjunct Venus
Mercury and Venus are separating from their conjunction with Uranus and the square with Saturn. Mercury and Venus have been pretty much conjunct in the last few days. Just after the square with Saturn, the two conjunct each other exactly. The two have experienced some challenging transits. With this conjunction, Venus gives some love and care to Mercury. Mercury may provide Venus with some clarity and insights.
Whatever rocky road you’ve traveled in the last few days, whatever chaos you’ve experienced in your mind, whatever doubt or trouble that you needed to battle; recovery is happening. Not all in life is stable and secure and in place. Life is challenging and life sometimes is about survival. But life also has your back. For one that’s the Goddess answering prayers. For another it’s drinking wine with friends. You’re not alone. Mercury and Venus have each other’s back today. Someone has your back too, even if you don’t see them.
The Full Moon arrives on April 27th 5.31 am at 7 degrees Scorpio.
I’ll be back soon with my insights on the upcoming Full Moon. X Maud
